Introduction to HydroShare

About This Course

In this HydroLearn Module, you will be introduced to HydroShare, an online data repository for researchers and scientists. You will learn how to navigate HydroShare and how to use its features such as finding and uploading data and using data sources to further your own academic research.

This course dives into the architecture of HydroShare and provides a quick and easy tutorial on how to create a HydroShare account. The learner will be taught concepts pertaining to HydroShare such as resources, apps, groups and collaboration, and data services. The learner will then have the opportunity to apply what they have learned and create their first repository.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course the learner should be able to state the function and importance of HydroShare in the research field. (Level 2: Understanding). Acknowledge the existence of the architecture of HydroShare. (Level 2: Understanding). Apply the features of HydroShare in a real life scenario and apply these skills to future applications. (Level 6: Creating). Generate a hydroshare account. (Level 6: Creating). Identify the difference between SHARING and PUBLISHING data in HydroShare. (Level 1: Remembering). Create a resource. (Level 6: Creating)

Prerequisites

No prerequisites are required. A basic understanding of civil engineering is helpful.

Dr. Dan Ames

Dr. Ames came to Brigham Young University in Fall 2012. Previously he was an Associate Professor at Idaho State University and a Research Assistant Professor at Utah State University. Dr. Ames is the original developer and project manager of several open source GIS based software tools including the widely used MapWindow GIS (www.mapwindow.org), DotSpatial Library (www.dotspatial.org) and HydroDesktop data management system (www.hydrodesktop.org). Dr. Ames’ research interests and publications include geospatial and hydrologic web services, hydrologic information systems, probabilistic watershed modeling, uncertainty characterization, terrain analysis, evapotranspiration, immersive virtual reality visualization, and open hardware data sensor networks. Dr. Ames has conducted and overseen numerous GIS and engineering software development projects funded by NSF, EPA, USGS, NASA, and various state and local agencies and private industry. He is presently the Editor-in-Chief of two academic journals, Environmental Modelling & Software and Open Water and is past president of the International Environmental Modelling & Software Society.
